Amateur vs Professional

Students Work (Amateur)

Actual Music Video (Professional)

Music Video Analysis

There are going to be some clear differences within these music video's, some being the camera and software simply due to budgeting differences, one is filmed by students, while the other is being filmed by professionals who have filmed many music video's before. Right from the beginning you can see there are clear differences, in the students work when starting to zoom into the house, you can see the camera shaking, which unless done on purpose there won't be any camera shakes within the professional music video's due to the high quality camera's that would need to be shaken on purpose to show. Another difference is lighting, most of the lighting used in the students work is natural and is too bright in some parts for the camera as the light shines on his face too much, where is with professional work, the lighting is controlled by expensive technology which blurs out and dims down the light. One thing i like about the students work is the creativity used, despite not having the connections for expensive editing software some transitions work out in their favour including when they transport from one place to another, personally i thought it was brilliant, and was incredibly well re-hearsed.
The professional music video has a lot of creativity, and multiple effects that make it. With the use of toy soldiers coming out of the water and oh so famous, chair spin which made its debut on fresh Prince of Belair. Overall the professional video had better quality, sound and lighting, which could mostly be down to budget differences.

Target Audience Questionnaire

For our music video we decided to choose the song Teenage Dirt-bag by Wheatus, in this music video we will matching the video to the lyrics of the song; the story is that there is a boy who is seen as the loser of the school, and he fancies this girl named 'Noelle', but she has a boyfriend who is one of the people who victimises the 'loser' mostly, but 'Noelle' eventually gets sick of the bullying behaviour and leaves her boyfriend. It comes to prom night and the 'loser' is sitting on his own, he looks up and sees 'Noelle' walking over to him, she finally comes out and says how she feels about him and turns out she likes him too. But, it comes to the end of it and he wakes up from his dream.

On a scale of 1 to 10 how good do you think this idea is?

Summary of idea

We have decided to make a music video to the song "Teenage Dirtbag".
For this video we will be telling the story of the lyrics. This is for a few major reasons.

  1. It would suit the lyrics most.
  2. It is a key code and convention
  3. We thought that it would be the best way to show the video
Our last few lessons have been spent planning and organising our music video. We now are going to write up all our ideas and details and are getting ready to start filming.

Planning The Film

To start planning our music video we had to analyse the lyrics of the music video, this gave us a better understanding and helped us to plan out our music video more. We analysed each line and put a scene to it that we felt would match it best

Web Pop Up Examples

Examples of Web Pop Ups

Web pop-ups happen all the time, and all of the time they correspond with your recent search history, if you've been online shopping they usually have ad pop-ups that use and show all of the items you have recently looked at.

Here are some examples of web pop-up ads...

This advert is small and short however it involves all of the standard amount of information, it noted the film title which is Ferris Bueller's Day Off, it has the date that the film starts which is May 9th, as well as the price as well, with it going at 5$. It informs the audience on all of the relevant information as well as a little more. It also uses a variety of colours to help make it stand out.

This advert as you can see is just at the top of a website, it's for a university and in the corner there is a visible logo for the university which makes it recognisable for those that are looking, it as a logo which again increases its chance of being recognised while ranging from different colours, this makes it more appealing to those that are looking at it. With the apply now button different from the rest, it almost makes people want to apply just as it appeals to them.

What is a Digipak?

What is a Digipak?

A Digipak is a type of packaging used for CD's, its a type of book fold that company's use to hold all aspects of the CD and DVD's. From the outside it looks like an average CD, but it consists of about four sections which fold out like a book, they can sometimes contain leaflets within the digipak that talk about the songs, everyone who took part in their making and everything that was used to create that particular song, it can sometimes even contain history about the songs involved. One Digipak that involved all of this information within the booklet was Michael Jacksons 'This Is It' CD, as it had written down all those that took part in the making, and the history as to how it came to be, with extra exclusive images that have been out in specifically for these booklets.

Advantages of Digipaks

  • Offers more than just CD's
  • High Quality graphics
  • Less likely to have disk damage
  • Can be collectors items
  • Bonus features and exclusives inside

Music Video Analysis - Teenage Dirtbag

In the start of the music video 'Teenage Dirtbag', they make everyone's character clear on who they are and who the dirtbag is, as at the beginning he's falling asleep on the stairs, followed by a scene where he's riding a bike to school alone; also they try to make him look like the odd one out of the whole school, as the bike shed only has his and a little girls pink bike there.

Right after this the song starts with the lyrics 'Her name is Noelle', and as the artist sings those lyrics a girl gets out of the car which just ran his bike over, they make it obvious on how he likes her because as she walks past him he continues to stare at her. As well as picking out the two main characters, they state her current boyfriend who is a bully, who clearly picks on the 'dirtbag' as well as everybody else in the music video, they state him by saying how her boyfriend is a 'dick' and how he brings a gun to school, as they do a long shot showing him at the front of a group of boys, which states he must be a ring leader, walks past the dirtbag and states that basically the bully doesn't care about him and barges him to the floor.

In one of the scenes it lunch time and the dirtbag is sitting at 'the loser table', standing across from the table is Noelle, her boyfriend and his friends, the dirtbag is nice enough to wave back whereas they throw something at him, Noelle clearly feels sorry for him and leaves her current boyfriend.
The next night is prom night, and the lyrics state on how terrible and unwanted he feels by saying how he feels like 'mould', then out of the blue he notices that Noelle is walking over to him, the lyrics state how it must be fake, as he thought something like this would never happen; then she comes out with taking him to see Iron Maiden with her, which is in the main chorus where he wants to take her, and she also states how shes just like him.

Throughout the chorus they state that she doesn't know what she's missing, which may be inferring he can give her all she wants, yet, it is all spoiled as it's all just a dream, when the artist says 'this must be fake', it was.

Past Students Work Analysis

As we are doing a music video on Wheatus 'Teenage Dirtbag', I decided to look at some previous music videos that other media students had created using this song. When searching for the previous videos I came across three different videos that had used some good ideas, the whole thing wasn't good but parts of them they used good ideas, in one of them they have the use of one of them being behind a microphone being the singer while also being the teenage dirtbag, which I thought was a good idea as this states who the dirtbag is. I also like the fact that how they used the setting of the video inside a school, as some others didn't, yet others played the role of a dirtbag really well, for instance she waved and the dirtbag thought it was him she was waving at and turned out to be waving to her boyfriend.

Wheatus

Image result for wheatus wannabe gangster in spaceshipWheatus do a range of types of music videos, like using Lego people to create a music video for the song 'Only You'; its like they try their best to stand out more than every other band by doing something different. In the song 'Wannabe Gangster' they use an Alien going through a story-line that the Alien wants to be a gangster, so within this video they use gangster like outfits to fit in with the title, like bandannas and baggy clothes. In their music videos they match the song lyrics in throughout the music video; their biggest hit being 'Teenage Dirt Bag' they made the song from the idea of the film, and used parts of the film to put into their music video so that the audience can see the difference between people and how they can be treated from who they are and how they act. To help the music video become more popular and likeable they decided to have the use of school corridors, school hall and the stage at the prom so it matches the whole school themed song. Wheatus show a lot of differences in all their videos, they try being different to every other band by wearing funky outfits, for instance in the 'Wannabe Gangster' music video they're all dressed in white in an Alien spaceship that is also all white, which may show purity, but as well as white trousers and top, the band leader wears a fluffy white hat, and baggy clothes which infers scruffiness. Initially the band are trying their best to stand out and be a different style of band that people would draw attention to, their songs probably help out some of the people with how they want to be like 'Teenage Dirt Bag'.

Magazine advert and CD cover comparisons

I will be analysing the difference between the adverts in a magazine article of an artist’s album and the actual artists CD cover. The artist that I have chosen to do this comparison on is Ed Sheeran and his album ‘+’.

The magazine advert as shown to the right is a very simple advert that is seen in a magazine, it contains a picture of the Ed Sheeran showing that it’s his album; the advert also contains the album name and Ed Sheeran’s bestselling songs at the time of the album’s release, as well as a quote referencing a review on the album by a magazine company.

The actual album cover, clearly shown on the left is almost similar to the magazine advert as it features a picture of the artist ed Sheeran along with his name and the small dog paw next to it which is hard to see on the magazine advert. In addition to this, like the magazine advert the ‘+’ sign is shown which replaces the need for a name for the album.

Researching Other Song Ideas

Researching other songs...

Teenage Dirtbag - Performed by Wheatus, this song has been a fundamental step for those in the pop punk industry, it features famous actors such as Jason Biggs and Mena Suvari, both famous for their rolls in the film American Pie. When analysing the lyrics we really enjoyed this song as it was a song a lot of people knew and still sang today. Even though it wasn't fast paced we liked the different narratives that we were able to create with it and thought that it would a fun and enjoyable music video to create, however we would need to look more into the song itself.

In Too Deep - This song is one of my favourites due to the different scenarios that you can build with it, its fast paced and can even have a hidden meaning within the song itself, so when looking at the music video you can see different narratives. While we like this song, we feel that we wouldn't be able to use it for a music video due to having a low budget and the low complexity of what we would be able to do with the music video.

All The Small Things - All the small things is one of my favourite songs and i feel this would be a great song to use for our A2 music video. Its fast paced and has a great ming with lyrics including 'Say it aint so, i will not go,' and 'Always, i know, you'll be at my show,' with this song there are a lot of ideas that we can look at and follow through with. Pop Punk also allows us to be rebellious against the stereotypes that pop puts on its artists and their music videos, so by using this song it could encourage us to challenge ourselves,
