Codes and conventions are used so that different genres of music have their own specific meanings and this will structure each individual genre which will help people recognize the different types of genres, it also ensures that the lyrics fit into the music video of how people would expect.

Conventions of music videos vary depending on the genre, however these general conventions include:

• ·         Editing techniques
• ·         Sound (diegetic non-diegetic)
• ·         Mise-en-scene – props, lighting, costume, hair and makeup, location/setting and colours
• ·         Stereotyping
