Style of Music Videos

Style of Music Video’s

Narrative

Narrative music videos are follows a story-line, there are two different types of narratives, there is Linear and Fragmented; a Linear starts a story at the beginning, goes on through the middle and ends at the end. A Fragmented narrative is one that doesn’t, where the lyrics of the song don’t necessarily link back with the music video. An example of a Linear narrative would be Katy Perry ‘Thinking of You’, as the story plays from the start of the music video right through to the end.

Mixture

Mixture is a mix of narrative and performance, this way it makes the music video become more interesting and enjoyable to watch. An example of this is Kelly Clarkson ‘Since you been gone’, the music video contains the singer and musicians having fun on the stage and jumping to the music, usually showing the audience which ensures the audience that it’s a song to dance to, and this type of music video has a story to it in some scenes.

Cameo

A cameo is where a band or artist features in the narrative but doesn’t perform; a good example of this is Drake and Rihanna – ‘What’s my name’ when both artists in the music video play a part in the narrative but don’t perform.
