What are Codes and Conventions?

Codes and conventions of music videos are the different techniques used to construct the meaning within the music videos, those techniques are split into two types; technical and symbolic:

Technical
This is the way the meaning is showed through the use of equipment, for instance it’ll be shown through different types of camera angles and shots; the type of sound used whether it’s diegetic or non-diegetic. The pace of the editing can give off other impressions whether it’s fast paced which would show a lot of energy or tension, and slow pace editing which could possibly show more upsetting emotions, and the type of genre of music, each genre will give off different meanings, pop being a party genre and rock that would usually show aggression.

Symbolic
Symbolic is how the meaning is shown through mise-en-scene, which would be facial expressions, the type of dancing, poses, gestures and the type of clothing that is worn. For instance when you have a music video outside in summer weather, they usually have the use of girls wearing short clothes and men possibly being topless at a party.
