Like most bands, people come and in and out of them depending on what they are wanting to do, for Nickelback they only have three members that have previously left the band unlike others who could have up to 20 previous members of the band. While this could be due to anything the previous members of the band had left due unforeseen reasons, however were thrilled to welcome new members into the band, they’ve had three drummers Brandon Kroeger, Mitch Guindon, Ryan Vikedal . CD Cover and Ad Analysis

Magazine Ad and CD Cover – Compare and Contrast

Green Day – 21st Century Breakdown

This particular Green Day advert is full of colour and is made to catch your eye and draw your attention to it, it’s almost laid out as a war poster, showing that the idea of the image is that they’re fighting for something, and as there is an image of a couple on the advert itself its giving off the impression that they’re fighting for the idea of love.

The main colours on the album advert are black, red, white and yellow, the red and black to represent danger and a dark part to the album whereas the white and yellow are used to show that there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel, and that there’s something for them to look forward to. The yellow showing happiness and the white showing purity. Each colour has an important representation of the album and the band that Green Day is, being known as Pop Punk, which means they make music for all but have meaning to the songs themselves.

On the advert its noted that it states when the CD will be released and the type of ways you are able to get a hold of this album, which includes buying it on CD as whereas downloading it digitally, this is in a different colour to most of the other writing as this could be because they want the music to stand out and the date to be remembered in hopes of attracting a new audience. They start the pattern fresh after to show what singles are now available in hopes of also attracting a new audience if they recognise the song.

The actual Green Day album isn’t much different its set out the same with the same black, red, white and yellow colours, however it doesn’t contain as much colour in the writing, the only writing on the album itself is the name of the band and the name of the album. Because this takes up most of the album cover, of people found out about the album through the advert this means they should hopefully recognise the album when it’s on sale, as a lot of the writing will stand out since its white and yellow. Because there’s such little colour it makes the album more recognisable as you do not have to remember as much.

CD cover, Ad and Music Video Analysis

Image result for simple plan cd coverImage result for simple plan front cover magazineIn this post I’ll be identifying the similarities that musicians/bands use in magazines, CD covers and music videos to present themselves; here I’ve chosen the rock band simple plan. In these images here the left being a magazine cover and the other being a CD cover, the similarities are pretty obvious, they wear similar outfits which are usually rather plain or dark and the odd chequered/striped shirt. They are also  using similar poses that are usually noticed most in rock sceneries, rather a clenched fist or the known rock hand sign being two fingers at either end of your hand pointing up. The font of the titles are nearly the same, as they both have the use of making the titles look scruffy of having the look of someone that’s scribbled over parts of the title. Now comparing the CD cover and the music video “I’d Do Anything”, again they all wear similar clothing as they are in the magazine and CD cover, dark or plain, and as always they use rock hand signs, and when you watch the music video the crowd are all rather punching the air with a clenched fist or using the rock hand signal; as well as using similar hand signals they even wear similar clothing which relates to punk rock fans which the is who the type of rock band they present themselves to be. As you can see in the corner of the CD cover it states the word “crazy”, which could infer that the music will make you go “crazy”, and in the music video it shows a massive group of people trying to get into a gig, and it shows everyone going crazy in and outside the gig; to get into the gig people are doing “anything” to get which matches the title of the song, and infers how people go crazy to listen to the punk rock band Simple Plan.

Magazine Ad and CD Cover – Compare and Contrast

Demi Lovato – Unbroken

This advert is capable of catching audiences due to the difference in the colours. With the contrast its more likely to appeal to more people, especially as there’s red writing on a nude and white background, it makes it stand out more to those looking at it.

The use of dark colours on a light background might relate to the name of the album itself with it being called Unbroken, the use of dark colours within her hair, on her lips and the writing means that she is bold and strong as she shines through everything, because the background for the writing is nude and there is a light sepia effect on the picture this might give off the idea that she is still pure and happy while being seen as strong and bold, therefor she is ‘Unbroken’.

The title of the album isn’t that easy to spot as It’s small and in the corner, however the artist is the most easiest to notice as nearly every word on the album is a different style of writing, meaning your eyes straight away go to the writing. Under the picture of the album it appears again the name of the album and the artist, in the same style, because it’s repeated several times this means you focus on it more. It states on the advert who is included in the track, this can draw other fans of those artists to the album as its attracting a newer audience.

The album is laid out the same way as the album advert, one of the only noticeable differences would simply be it doesn’t include who would be on the track collaborating with the artist, or when the album would be in stores, which according to the advert would be now as it would have been a while since the album would have been released. All in all, the album isn’t much different to the album advert itself.

Music Video Analysis - Mika

MIKA - Popular song ft. Ariana Grande

The video relates a lot to the lyrics, which are about people who are popular and bully people. The video tells a story, where the two singers invite their former bullies to a dinner party where they poison them and turn them to stone.

The video has a lot of closeups of the stars, and this shows that the selling point of the song is the artist rather than the song as much. This is probably at the demand of the record label because that is a popular technique used in the music industry.

Lastly there is also intertextual reference to the musical Wicked. There is a song called popular in it and it has the same tune as this song and some of the lyrics cross reference.

Where might our Advert appear?

As our target audience is between the ages 13-18, they are more likely to notice adverts that are placed on cycle media sites such as..

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Instagram
  • Tumblr
  • Youtube
How does this link with the target audience?

One of the main places they would most likely notice the ad will be on YouTube as they are already searching for music to listen to. You can also pay to have your music video recommended when someone clicks on a certain video. This way the artists and record label know that they are advertising to the right target audience since they can recommend similar music for them to listen to.
Anyone who subscribes to your channel will also receive notifications about uploads that you have posted and any recommended videos that they might like, which is a great way to target your audience, and recent followers.

Styles of Music Video's

Styles and Types of Music Video's

Meat Loaf 'I'd Do Anything For Love' Music Video
Narratives - Narrative music videos tell a story, they have a specific meaning to them, music video's such as Meat Loafs 'I'd Do Anything For Love', are big on the narrative music video's. Meat Loaf is one of the first artists to use narrative music videos to the extent that he did, the ended up becoming miniature films, which had a beginning, middle and end. There is a clear relationship between the lyrics and the visuals involved, and often even have footage from a film, a more recent example would be Ed Sheeran's Photograph, which was most recently used in the film 'Me Before You' a knew music video has came out with clips coming from this. Another example would be Belinda Carlisle's 'Heaven Is A Place On Earth', which also features performances from Belinda as well as footage from a film. So there are different kinds of narrative stories to tell, but all come under the same thing, narrative.

Justin Bieber 'All Around The World' music Video
Performance - Performance based music video's are mainly used in rock songs, since there is no common message for the audience to be looking at and are usually of the artist or band performing the song. Hence why its called performance based. The artist will usually give the audience direct eye contact, to show that they are talking to the audience and not telling a story, one example of this is Michael Jackson's 'This Is It', which features a lot of footage from him practising his performance as he passed away before the music video could be made. The King of Pop made several performance music video's as thats what he was known for. His ability to bring in the audience and the show's that he put on is the reason why he was a performer. Another example is Justin Bieber's 'All Around The World', which features footage from his Believe tour, it contains him singing on stage to his fans and them singing along with him, with live vocals as well.

Michael Jackson's 'Speed Demon' Music Video
Concept - Concept music video's usually have no form of narrative, and are usually their own thing, they simply follow a concept. The concept can be anything that the artist wants it to be, it can be anything from magic, supernatural, historical and follows this specific theme, so while it doesn't follow a specific storyline or contain any performers, it has a specific theme that is followed throughout the music video. Concept music video's are known to be interesting and this is what is said to attract the consumers since its not something they are use to. An Example of a concept music video is 'I Don't Wanna Know' by Maroon 5, a rather unusual music video as it features the artists walking around in animal costumes which have nothing to do with the song itself, as well as 'Paradise' by Coldplay as they walk around in Elephant costumes. All of these music videos have no certain theme to them, other than they stick to the idea of being weird and repeat the costumes to keep viewers interested. One of the most famous concept music video is Michael Jacksons 'Speed Demon' which features animation as well and Michael being able to turn into a bunny with cartoon characters chasing after him on a motorbike.

Why and Who makes adverts?

Why and Who makes adverts?
Coco-Cola advertisment from the 1890's
Adverts are made to help reach the target audiences. They are used to grad the attention from those that it wouldn't even normally reach, they bring in a wider range of people. They promote products to these target audiences. An advertiser pays and looks over the advertisements and even decides the message that it wants to send to its target audience.

Its advertised in various ways, which means its brought to the consumers and the target audience in various forms, such as...
Advertisement for a live radio broadcast (1930)
  • Newspaper
  • Magazines
  • Television
  • Radio
  • Outdoor Advertising
  • Direct Mail
  • Websites
  • Search Results or even blogs.
Adverts are made by people who know the business, companies won't usually hire someone outside of their books who don't know what the business wants or the type of person they need to make the adverts.

Businesses will usually look at these four designers when needing to create an advertisement.
  • Graphic Designers
  • Art directors
  • Copy Writers
  • Creative Directors

Analysis of Adverts

Analysis of Adverts

There are several kinds of adverts they all come into play and help bring in a wider target audience while trying to sell their products. The aim of the game is to attract as many consumers as they can while appealing to the majority that would require the product they sell at.

What kind of adverts are there?

There are several kinds of advertising, and they all require different methods of practice and can be important to attract different kinds of audiences.

Types of advertising...

  • Broadcast Media - Television and Radio, television means the product and advertisements can reach a wider audience. Radio however is more suitable for smaller businesses as its more affordable.
  • Print Media - Magazines and Newspapers are two forms of traditional print media. Magazines mean they can provide to a wider spread of audiences depending on the where they decide to advertise. While newspapers are cheaper to advertise in, you have to have a universal product for it to work.
  • Support Media - Is where a business will advertise their product through additional media such as billboards, transits, bus benches. They offer a wider range of audiences in local or regional audiences.
  • Direct Marketing - This is direct mail, email and telemarketing. Telemarketing is where you're able to survey customers on the products. Direct mail where postcards can contain relevant information about your products and email is where you can send emails with exclusive offers to subscribers about these products.
  • Product Placement - Product Placement is one of the newest forms of advertising, it can be done involving multiple media forms, such as through posts on social media sites, through music videos as well as films. This is where a company will pay to have their products shown in medias such as music videos to help promote the name of the company. This can use well known actors or public personalities to help promote their film.
  • Internet - The internet has one of the largest forms of audiences for company's to promote on, this means using pop up ads, banners, text ads and paid search placements, they pop up on a number of pages that the business has paid for.

CD Cover and Ad Analysis

Magazine Ad and CD Cover – Compare and Contrast

Florence and the Machine – Lungs

Florence and the Machine’s album advert is exciting and new, it uses a range of different colour’s in the advert, these all stand out to the audience and make it unique. With all of the colours together it gives it a natural kind of feel to it and makes it appealing to the audience’s eye.

The Album advert to symbolise the album is actually called lungs, looks as if they have placed a wooden necklace, with wooden lungs attached to them to give the appearance of the lungs, instead of not showing them at all. By being surrounded by plants, these produce Oxygen to help you breath by taking in the Carbon Dioxide, so perhaps the reason why she is laying on a bed of flowers is to help her breath through her lungs, which is the name of the album.

You know the name of the album as it’s the only thing that is underlined, this makes it appeal to customers more as it’s something that isn’t on there or repeated, it draws there attention to the actual album advert.

The album advert features the front cover of the CD for the most part as it makes it more recognisable to those who may want to buy it, it also features the date that is planned for its release (6/07/09) and the formats that you can buy this album in (CD, DELUXE CD. VINYL AND DIGITAL).

The CD Cover is exactly the same as the album advert, except without the feature tracks, or the dates of its release, this is because they don’t need to include this information as the album would be already out by this time. It features the same colour scheme and images as well as the same type of text so that the audience knows what to look out for.

General Music Video Questionnaire

Here is our questionnaire regarding a general target audience. This is to help us understand what different age groups like and the type of genre, and target audience that we want to go for. I asks people a general age range and genders to help us gain a wider understanding of what we need to include in our music video.

Music video analysis - Girls

Goodwin’s Music Video Analysis
Music Video Analysis – Girl’s

In this document I will be analysing the music video that goes with the 1975 song “GIRLS”. The 1975 are a English indie rock band, who generally are dressed in dark clothes with a black and white filter and in matter of fact at the start of the video the band are discussing that they’re not a pop band and that their style of music doesn’t fit the directors idea of how the music video should look like
The music video follows with this clip with very quick editing cuts of the two guitarists playing their instruments to the song creating the tune of the song, as well as this it cuts to a close up of the lead singers face, showing his facial expressions, from the shot it tells us that he doesn’t look in the mood to shoot the video as it isn’t the way the band wants to film it, this is a reoccurring theme throughout the entirety of the music video.

As well as this, in the video when the opening verse starts the music video introduces female counterparts, dressed in all black underwear, which is one of the defining looks of the band except they’re all women, this is also a reoccurring theme that takes place in the video. During the video  the scene changes to the band and their female opposites in a swimming pool party area, with a variety of bright colours on display which is the opposite of the bands style as they're used to dark colours and parties with alcohol and drugs as opposed to the barbeque party that is shot in the video.

CD Cover and Ad Analysis

Magazine ad and CD – Compare and Contrast

Greenday – American Idiot

This American Idiot Album ad, is plain and simple, its set out the same as the actual album itself, with the same images being used this makes it more recognisable to those that want to buy the album so they know what to look out for.

It features the same three colours, red, black and white, this can symbolises the album isn’t particularly for most audiences but can relate to some, and because of the use of white has a innocence to it which can be seen on several of the songs released on the album e.g. Boulevard of Broken Dreams and When September Ends, these songs have kind of an innocence to them, whereas the red and black are assembled for a niche audience.

The grenade on the cover is in the shape of a heart and a person is holding it while its bleeding, this could mean that the reason the album is called American idiot, is because the person’s heart was in someone else’s hands and any minute now it could explode, the reason it’s called American idiot is because the band is American and claim they’re an idiot for putting their heart in someone else’s hands.

The CD cover for this is exactly the same, titled ‘American Idiot’ it has the same images on it, and nothing has changed. The reason why they probably never added anything else onto the advert is because they didn’t want to take away the attention from the album itself as if there is too much writing on it people might just skip past it or not recognise it as much without the writing. So it’s been kept plain and simple to draw the attention to the image and keep it there making it recognisable for those who want to buy it.

The only difference between the Magazine Advert and the CD Cover is the fact that one is longer and bigger than the other, and that’s because of what they’re going to be posted on, so one has to be bigger to appeal to more people.
